What is Fasting in Ramadan?

Fasting in Ramadan, known as “Sawm” in Arabic, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is observed by Muslims worldwide during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations from dawn (Fajr Prayer/Adan) until sunset (Maghrib Prayer/Adan). Fasting serves as a spiritual practice aimed at fostering self-discipline, empathy, and closeness to Allah (God). It is also a time for increased prayer, reflection, and acts of charity. The pre-dawn meal before fasting begins is called “Suhoor,” and the meal to break the fast at sunset is called “Iftar.” Fasting during Ramadan is obligatory for adult Muslims, with exceptions for those who are ill, traveling, pregnant, breastfeeding, menstruating, or experiencing other health-related issues.

What is Qatayif?

Qatayif is a beloved sweet treat enjoyed during the holy month of Ramadan in Jordan and many other Middle Eastern countries. These delectable desserts are often described as stuffed pancakes or folded crepes. They are typically filled with a variety of delicious fillings such as sweet cheese, nuts, or a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Once filled, qatayif are fried or baked until golden and crispy, then soaked in a fragrant sugar syrup flavored with rose water or orange blossom water. Qatayif are traditionally served warm and are a favorite among locals and visitors alike during Ramadan festivities.
